They are both wistful songs even though one is sad and one is sort of happy. But there are also similarities in the verse melodies and a bit in the choruses. However this is more pronounced in the version that was done by "Christian" on the CD "Coolidge 50" than it is in the original Shaw Brothers version, so it could be that Christian was channeling New Order in their version.

The verse vocal melody to Leo Sayer's signature 70s soft rock ballad, When I Need Love (released February 1977) bears a strong resemblance to the chorus vocal melody to Leonard Cohen's folk song Famous Blue Raincoat (released 1971). The intro/outro vocal melody to Elton John and Gary Osborne's pop hit Little Jeannie (released May 1,1980) also seems to take inspiration from Famous Blue Raincoat (i.e "You stepped into my life from a bad dream [...]"). Thanks to Ian R. (@77BlueJays) for suggesting this comparison!

While X Ambassadors' hit Renegades (released March 3, 2015) mines the same folksy/jamboree territory as the Lumineers and Mumford and Sons, it's chord changes are reminiscent of British rock group Sniff 'n' the Tears' Driver's Seat (released 1979).

While the verse to Maroon 5's Won't Go Home Without You (released November 19, 2007) may have been patterned after the Police's Every Breathe You Take, Adam Levine seems to have borrowed the song's chorus from Don McLean's poignant paean to Van Gogh, Vincent (released June 17, 1971). While in different keys (WGHWY: Eb; Vincent: G), both choruses share close relative vocal melodies and the same relative chord progression.

Additional notes/observations:

The chorus vocal melody to American singer-songwriter Rachel Platten's Fight Song (released February 19, 2015) is similar to the traditional Irish folk ballad Molly Malone, which dates back to the 1700s, and was popularized in 1977 by the Dubliners (U2, Peter Seeger, and Bing Crosby, among others, have also recorded the song). Both songs are in the key of G major, and emphasize the root note of the diatonic scale (G) in the first bar, and the second note of the diatonic scale in the second bar. Fight Song's production/arrangement (marching drums, bass drone, chant vocal reverb) owes a debt to Katy Perry's Roar (1:08).
